If you are heading off to college you know that there are many things that you will need to bring with you. Whether you are far from home or not, there is one thing that you may want to add to the list of things to do before you go, and that is to apply for a student credit card. It may seem like a strange addition to the list when you have been thinking about things like books, clothes, things for your dorm, etc. but it is as important as the rest of the items, if not more so. A student credit card can be your back up funding source should you have an emergency.
Applying for a credit card is really easy and you’ll find that you can have it done in just a matter of minutes. The application process is really simple now, especially when you do it online, because you don’t have to wait days or weeks for a response as to whether you have been approved and what your credit limit will be. Instead, you will bed notified within seconds whether or not you have been approved and what your spending limit will be. This process is much more efficient than it was when your parents went to college!
When you apply there will be several pieces of information that you will need to provide. The first thing that you will be asked for is your legal first and last name and perhaps a middle initial. You will then be asked for your address and if you have moved within the last couple years you might have to provide your previous address, as well. After you have inputted this information you will need to provide some other basics such as your date of birth, your social security or tax payer identification number, and also your financial information. You will be asked who your employer is, how long you have worked there, and how much you make. In addition you may be asked information about other debts.
When you supply all of this information you have essentially completed the application process and after reading through a bit of information you can hit the submit button and the site will process your application. At this time you will be notified of your acceptance and within a week or two you will receive in the mail. It is a good idea to apply for your student credit card four to six weeks before you will be leaving for college as this will allow you plenty of time to apply for and receive the card before you leave.
You never know what you may need when you are away from home. Car repair bills and medical bills are things that many college students do not have the cash on hand to pay for and a credit card will definitely come in handy. With lower interest rates on these cards than the average cards, it is also easier to pay back anything that you do charge.
